Algorithm

A linear formula, or clear set of rules, for solving a problem. This can be compared to a recipe for baking lasagna, in everyday life. In computer science, an algorithm consists of simple, specific instructions or applications for executing a task employing the fewest steps possible, such as programming. Formulas can be simple or complex. Building algorithms can be complicated as it requires accuracy, logic and often times repetition. For instance, if a formula is flawed, even slightly, a problem cannot be solved. In the US, and in some other countries, an algorithm can be patented. Search Engines develop algorithms to help determine the relevency and context of the documents indexed in their databases.

With the introduction of artificial intelligence, today's theme-based search engines are putting forth ever more complicated rules and solutions in an effort to make retrieval of data as accurate and relevant as can be.
