Social media may seem like a modern phenom, but technically, social networking on the internet predates the World Wide Web. That’s right, the Internet herself was developed originally as a networked Bulletin Board System so that NASA could share files and
have conversations with Universities around the country. That was back in the 1960’s. The “Web” appeared later with the appearance of HTML, a hyper text markup language that allowed designers to put graphical pages on line. By the mid 1990’s the World Wide Web became the “commercial” space, and the place, for doing business online. All the while social media continued to exist in the form of groups, Usenet and forums. Then came the Blog.
Blogging revolutionized the Web by allowing anyone to have a voice with this new instant publishing platform. Search engines look at a blog as part news and part social. As of this writing, 19% of all Sites online are published on a WordPress platform. It is certainly easy to see why blogs are social, mainly because they allow you to have a sense of community, where comments to posts lead to conversations and engagement. I have another page dedicated to blogging so I want to move into writing about more purely social media platforms.
There are over 50 social media platforms that are currently valued at over $100M so, in part, for the sake of brevity, I am just going to focus on informing you about what I consider to be the most important social media sites at this time. These are not listed in order of importance as each certainly has its own purpose and provides unique benefits for your business. Suffice it to say that if it is on this list, it is an important part of the mix that is needed to establish market leadership for your brand in today’s environment.
6. Google Plus
If you can create systems and streamline your time, labor and money resources for building a presence in these social arenas you will definitely be able to take your business to the next level and beyond. I help my clients identify which social sites to prioritize as part of a custom marketing strategy that each receives. Each business is different. One company may find it best to put these sites importance ordered one way, for instance, Website-Blog-Twitter-Facebook-LinkedIn, while another business may find it most productive to prioritize Website-Youtube-Pinterest-Facebook, etc.
